Customs House will be transformed into a beautiful canvas of light and colour when Vivid LIVE takes over Sydney after dark from 24 May – 15 June 2019.
Cafe Sydney is at the heart of the Vivid action, with stunning views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. This year, Chinese-American visual artist and filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang’s Austral Flora Ballet will take over the iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House with a hypnotic fusion of contemporary dance and motion-capture technology that showcases a lush and visceral projected artwork of dancing digital sculptures inspired by Australia’s native floral.
Our very own Customs House will come alive with award-winning creative studio Spinifex Group’s Under the Harbour, a surreal underwater encounter that will delight children and adults alike as its splashed across the façade of the building.

In its 66th year, The Sydney Film Festival will bring the world’s best new films to Sydney for 12 days and nights of inspiring and entertaining premieres, talks and parties. This year’s festival will include the premiere of Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, Richard E. Grant, Greta Scacchi, Jacqueline McKenzie and Heather Mitchell.

As we welcome the cooler weather, the always seasonal Cafe Sydney menu begins to embrace the best of the Autumn and Winter produce that is now on offer. Executive Chef James Kidman shares what you can expect to find on the menu at your next visit to Cafe Sydney.
“We are making the best out of the in-season Jerusalem artichokes serving them pureed with a beautiful pressed lamb shoulder, lamb rump, fried quail egg and jus. Our roasted pork belly, pork and cider sausages, and bacon are perfectly complimented with an apple calvados cream, brown butter and red cabbage. For an autumnal twist, we’ve added cauliflower and creamed leek to our spanner crab soup with squid and mussels.
With the abundance of beautiful quinces around, we’ve updated our dessert menu pairing them with Valhrona dark chocolate, hazelnut mousse and crème fraiche. We’re also making the most of some late season figs by serving them grilled with puff pastry, glazed pomegranate and honey cream.
It’s not just fruit and vegetables that have a season, with both fish and duck having more fat during the cooler months. We’re taking advantage of the fatter duck by preparing it as part of a warming cassoulet with a Paris style pork sausage. Expect to see plenty of salmon, kingfish and tuna on our regular specials’ menu as during the next few months the fish puts on more fat than usual meaning more flavour!”

Cafe Sydney’s Salted Caramel Martini:
30ml x 42 Below Vodka
15ml x Teichenne Butterscotch Schnapps
15ml x Kahlua
20ml x Salted Caramel sauce
20ml x Fresh Cream
Coat a martini glass rim with sea salt (try rubbing a thin layer of Schnapps around the rim to help the salt stick)
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice
Briskly shake, then strain into glass
