May is Australian Wine Month and at Cafe Sydney we love any excuse to celebrate the world-class wine produced in our own backyard. We are very proud of our all Australian wine list and Gourmet Traveller Wine’s 2 glass rating awarded in the 2016 Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards.
The revitalised wine list covers a wealth of styles and varieties. Simon Curkovic believes that the Australian Rose on the list rival and surpass many of the French Roses while “the reds are second to none with varietal and regional expression that equal anything in Europe.” He has also selected exceptional sparkling wines including both traditional Champagne styles as well as Prosecco inspired versions. And don’t start him on the superb range sweet and fortified wines now produced in Australia.
The good news is that if it all sounds a little confusing, Simon and his team, would love helping you select the right wines to celebrate Australian Wine Month.
Indulging in an aperitif before a meal is a civilised commonly practiced ritual enjoyed throughout Europe. An aperitif stimulates the palate and should be a crisp, clean and light drink which balances the correct flavours to create a mood for the meal.
Our master of beverages, Simon Curkovic, has selected an exceptional range of Vermouth, Sherry, Madeira and Pastis. The Australian selection of Vermouth on offer are all made from neutral pre-ferment wine base, aromatised with a mix of herbs, root and barks before being fortified.
While thrilling the palate with intriguing and complex flavours from dry and zesty to medium rich, our range Sherry offers extraordinary value whether hailing from Barossa or Jerez.
As for Madeira, international wine writer Jancis Robertson believes Madeira “is one of the most wickedly underrated fine wines” and we have some absolute beauties for your pleasure.
And for anise and liquorice lovers, there is always the sweetness and punch of the Pastis such as Pernod.
Request the aperitif menu during your next visit and enjoy the experience in the Cafe Sydney lounge before your meal.
